David Allan Cates

David is a novelist and poet, but has worn many other hats in his life. He’s played professional basketball in Central America, been a fishing guide on the Smith River and raised cattle on his family’s farm in Wisconsin.

He’s the author of five novels, including Hunger in America (1992), X Out of Wonderland (2006), Freeman Walker (2008), Ben Armstrong’s Strange Trip Home (2012), and Tom Connor’s Gift (2014), which won a Gold Medal from the Independent Book Publishers Award. 

His nonfiction has appeared in magazines such as Outside Magazine and The New York Times Sophisticated Traveler

David currently lives and writes in Missoula, MT, and teaches for the Missoula Writing Collaborative.
