Beth Melody

Beth’s first formal music training was a cardboard keyboard on her desk in second grade at a Chicago public school. After failed real piano lessons in third grade, ending in a spectacular tantrum on the piano bench, Beth took a four-decade-long hiatus. She then bought a used Martin, and she and her friend Shaun Gant sat on the lawn playing their guitars like two teenagers in their late forties. Candy Breath was born, Beth’s first musical collaboration. Shortly after that she was startled to find herself in her fifties playing and singing rock, pop, country, and blues around Missoula in a band called Lefty Lucy. There she met harmonica virtuoso LaBarre Bankshot, and together they formed Toybox, performing sometimes as a duo and sometimes a four-piece with drummer Mark Dixon and bassist John West. For the last ten years Beth has been dabbling in songwriting with lyricist Gwen McKenna. Her plan is to continue this songwriting and music-playing trend through her sixties and seventies.
